There are three primary types of hydrogen storage: physical-based methods (like compressed hydrogen and liquid hydrogen), material-based methods (like metal hydrides, chemical hydrogen storage, and sorbents), and underground hydrogen storage. Each method has its advantages and challenges. For example, while compressed hydrogen is commonly used for vehicle storage, it requires high pressures. Liquid hydrogen offers higher densities but needs cryogenic temperatures. Material-based methods involve chemical reactions or physical adsorption to store hydrogen. The DOE's goal is to develop advanced storage systems that are safe, cost-effective, and have high energy densities to facilitate the widespread adoption of hydrogen technologies.
