Funding was provided by Michigan Economic Development Corporation (Nadia Abunasser, Contract Manager) and the University of Michigan Office of Research for the workshop and related research to prepare this report.
The Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) plans to release a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for "Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs" (H2Hubs), with $8 billion allocated through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. These hubs will play a crucial role in building a national clean hydrogen network, contributing to decarbonization and providing regional and community benefits. At least four H2Hubs will be established across the U.S.
In anticipation of this FOA, the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS) hosted a workshop on hydrogen opportunities for the state of Michigan. Supported by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), the workshop evaluated hydrogen production, storage, delivery, and end-use applications, focusing on Michigan’s current and potential hydrogen ecosystem. The findings identified opportunities for hydrogen demand clusters and recommended areas for hydrogen technology deployment across Michigan and the Midwest. Detailed spatial mapping of regional hydrogen assets provided the foundation for future hydrogen technology planning and development.
