When used in fuel cells, it combines with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, with water and heat as the only by-products, making it an environmentally friendly energy source. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing in research and development to reduce the costs and improve the performance of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. The DOE's efforts encompass a wide range of applications, including transportation (like fuel cell electric vehicles), backup power systems, and combined heat and power systems for buildings. The DOE also collaborates with other federal agencies, national laboratories, and private industry to advance the deployment of these technologies and transform the U.S. energy landscape.
