The European Council has adopted new regulations to decarbonize the gas market, supporting the European Green Deal's goal of climate neutrality by 2050. These regulations, part of the EU's strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, establish common market standards for renewable, natural gas, and hydrogen. They aim to reduce EU reliance on Russian fossil fuels, enhance access to the gas grid, and promote hydrogen and renewable gases, especially in high carbon regions. Set to take effect six months after publication, the rules mark a significant step in Europe's transition to a cleaner energy future. EU Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, emphasized the shift towards a renewable and clean gas market, underscoring Europe's move away from Russian energy dependencies.
