The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced a funding of up to $20 million to develop technologies that stimulate the production of hydrogen within the Earth's subsurface, tapping into naturally accumulating deposits known as geologic hydrogen. This initiative aims to support the Biden Administration's net-zero goals by potentially producing sufficient hydrogen to decarbonize challenging industries. ARPA-E Director, Evelyn N. Wang, emphasized the transformative potential of accessing geologic hydrogen. The funding is allocated to two Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) Exploratory Topics: one focusing on stimulating hydrogen production from mineral deposits in the subsurface, and the other on improving extraction technologies, reservoir management, and risk assessment related to geologic hydrogen.
