Hydrogen Energy Development in Texas

Dec 4, 2024

A Report for the 89th Texas Legislature By the Texas Hydrogen Production Policy Council.

Texas is uniquely positioned to lead the global hydrogen economy due to its abundant natural resources, robust infrastructure, and decades of experience in hydrogen production. A new report from the Texas Hydrogen Production Policy Council outlines steps to strengthen the state’s leadership by leveraging its existing regulatory framework while addressing gaps to support safe, efficient, and scalable hydrogen production, transportation, and storage.

Key recommendations include enhancing safety measures, streamlining permitting processes, and investing in hydrogen infrastructure across the value chain. The report highlights the potential for hydrogen to boost Texas’ economy, with projections of $247 billion in direct investment, 90,000 to 180,000 new jobs, and $100 billion in annual GDP by 2050. These opportunities are supported by growing demand from sectors like renewable fuels, clean manufacturing, and energy exports, positioning Texas as the epicenter of the hydrogen industry. The Council stresses the importance of balancing regulatory efficiency with innovation to capitalize on this transformative energy transition.
