Alaska scientists and policymakers look to hydrogen as power source of the future

Alaska is exploring the potential of geologic hydrogen as a transformative energy source. At a recent workshop hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, leaders and experts discussed how hydrogen could support the state's energy needs, especially in remote areas disconnected from traditional power grids. With Alaska’s unique geology and the prospect of combining hydrogen with renewable energy, this approach could be pivotal for economic development and emissions reduction. As geologic hydrogen forms quickly and has vast potential reserves, experts see it as a game-changer for sustainable energy. “The challenge is great, but we’re on the edge of discovery,” said Mark Myers of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces Awards for Up to $2.2 Billion for Two Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced an additional $2.2 billion in award commitments for two Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs: the Gulf Coast Hydrogen Hub (HyVelocity Hub) and the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen Hub (MachH2). These hubs, part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda and funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aim to accelerate clean hydrogen production and infrastructure. The Gulf Coast Hub will leverage Texas's renewable energy and natural gas, creating 45,000 jobs, while the Midwest Hub will drive industrial decarbonization in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan, creating 12,000 jobs. These two hubs moving forward will drive the U.S. closer to its 2030 hydrogen production goals, significantly cutting emissions while generating tens of thousands of jobs across the nation.
