The recent advancements by H2FLY lends to the conversation at the Federal Aviation Administration about hydrogen aviation. H2FLY, a subsidiary of Joby Aviation, has successfully completed the first piloted flight of an electric aircraft powered by liquid hydrogen. Using cryogenically-stored liquid hydrogen instead of its gaseous form results in significantly reduced tank weights and volume, thus extending the aircraft's range. With this development, the range of H2FLY's HY4 demonstrator aircraft has doubled from 466 miles to 932 miles, marking a significant milestone in the effort to decarbonize mid to long-range aviation.
