BMW of North America has officially committed to producing hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, with the first models expected by 2028. In collaboration with Toyota Motor Corporation, the two companies will develop next-generation powertrain systems for both commercial and passenger vehicles, while ensuring each brand maintains its distinct identity. The first hydrogen-powered BMW models are likely to come from its current portfolio, possibly the 5-Series or X5. Notably, BMW emphasizes that these fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) will complement, rather than replace, its existing battery-electric lineup.
Both companies are focused on reducing the costs of hydrogen technology and expanding refueling infrastructure to support broader adoption. Through this partnership, BMW and Toyota aim to create demand for hydrogen while advancing their vision for carbon neutrality. With both brands already utilizing hydrogen in operations and development, their collaboration marks a significant step toward the future of sustainable mobility.
