At Virginia Tech, researcher Rohit Pandey is benefiting from the Biden administration's initiative to enhance hydrogen infrastructure, which includes over $7 billion in funding. Pandey has been awarded $1.5 million to investigate underground hydrogen storage in Appalachia’s depleted gas reservoirs, a project that aims to boost energy independence and foster regional job growth. This initiative positions the area to become a leading producer of hydrogen, leveraging existing infrastructure to store hydrogen both economically and securely. Pandey's work will test the feasibility of this storage method and develop strategies to mitigate risks such as hydrogen leakage. This project not only supports Appalachia’s transition to cleaner energy but also serves as a model for hydrogen storage globally.
