The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management has announced up to $15 million in funding to advance clean hydrogen production from alternative feedstocks like biomass, household waste, and plastics. The initiative aims to make clean hydrogen more available and affordable for electricity generation, industrial decarbonization, and transportation, helping the U.S. achieve its goal of a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. The funding will support research and development in gasification technologies, a process that converts waste into synthesis gas, which can then be used to produce clean hydrogen.
This initiative also aligns with the DOE's Hydrogen Shot initiative, which targets reducing the cost of clean hydrogen by 80% within the next decade. Applicants are expected to consider diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their projects, ensuring equitable access to the benefits of these technology innovations.
